Project Originality, Necessity and Justification
Persons Living with Disabilities are among the poorest, needy, vulnerable, marginalized, underprivileged, deprived, under-served, disadvantaged and minority groups in Ghana. They are often taken for granted segment within communities and society. And regrettably, are predominantly confined to the periphery of economic, social, democratic, political, cultural, community, societal, family and developmental structures. Though, they have formidable potentials and the talents to contribute meaningfully to social, cultural, economic and national development when given the right tools, opportunities, linkages, training, capacity-building and support.
Evidently, but not a surprise, the prevailing conditions exposes this group to, and are forced to face enormous, diverse and intrinsically intertwined pervasive, systemic and emerging human or minority rights and developmental challenges, difficulties, issues and/or barriers within Ghana. These challenges, difficulties, issues and/or barriers include and not limited to those highlighted below;
- Pervasive prejudices, stereotypes, glass ceilings and tokenism.
- Aggravated social, cultural, economic and political exclusion and injustice.
- Systemic inequality, neglect, alienation, discrimination, stigmatization, bullying and victimization.
- Horrific forms of sexual, domestic, marital and relationships violence, abuse, molestation, exploitation and rape.
- Excruciating lack of conducive, accessible and enabling sustainable environments, opportunities, linkages and support systems for self-actualization, determination and development.
- Endemic poverty, illiteracy, lack of access to investment or financial capital, sustainable and decent work, jobs or employment, income generation opportunities, linkages and support systems, quality education, health care or medical services, training, capacity-building and applicable or employable skills acquisition.
- Extremely pathetic mobility, buildings, transportation, public and/or private spaces and places, other facilities, amenities and infrastructure. Including and in particular, tourist sites, attractions, locations and other places of interest, information, official, social and community events, programs and activities accessibility.
Through the provision of sustainable and decent employment, alternative livelihoods, job creation, income generation and livelihoods improvement tools, opportunities, linkages and support systems for Persons Living with Disabilities, who regrettably, are among the poorest, needy, vulnerable, deprived, underprivileged, marginalized and minority groups. And also less or uneducated, unskilled and semi-skilled labor force within Ghana, also become more robust, resilient, resourceful, self-reliant, thriving and empowered economically and socially to both fend for themselves and contribute meaningfully to national development.
